The dip stick is unique to the ST165 3S-GTE engine, for some reason. I thought the 3S-GE engine or 3S-FE engine would have the same part number, but they do not. Below are 3 places that have salvage ST165 engines (the top one listed is remanufactured, so likely won't sell you just the dip stick). The bottom two may - you'll have to call to find out. There are 3 salvage sources who have ST165 JDM engines as well, and the dip stick part number also applies to these, so a few more options for you.

Good leads thanks. Car-parts.com didn't have dipstick specifically but finding an engine source might work

I don't have an ST165. There is an ST162 in the salvage yard near me. It would be great if someone who has an ST165 could compare their dip stick against that out of an ST162. I'm thinking the only thing that is different is above the tube it goes into. I'm thinking the ST165 has a couple of bends in the handle that avoids contacting something above the dip stick tube, but from the point of going into the dip stick tube to the tip of the stick, they would be identical (meaning, bend the handle of the dip stick tube from an ST162 and it will properly measure oil level in an ST165). But someone would need to make this comparison first!

You'd want to double check this, but I would think the oil capacity and pan is the same for a bunch of S series engines (3SGTE, 3SGE, 3SFE, 5SFE, etc) since the Moroso pan fits at least the 3SGTE and 5SFE. Based on that I would think that as long as the tube comes from the same spot on the block and is the same length the dipstick itself could be interchanged. If the dipstick for one of those is at least longer you could modify it to show the correct ST165 measurements on it.

Anyone want to post a photo of their ST165 dipstick and a measurement? I have a ST162 at junkyard nearby. Not sure if engine is in it?

I've got both cars 162 and 165 and they are definitely not the same. The 165 is a lot longer and above the stop at the top of the tube,it's a different shape.

The 165 is 20.5" overall length from very top of that circular grip to the end tip. It's slightly bowed, so in the pic attached, i pressed it flat against the measuring tape. Looks like it wouldn't be too difficult to customize one.

Top part where the dipstick goes into the tube at the 9" mark.

What's important is the dip stick length from the top of the tube stop (last of Rick89GTS pics) to the tip of the dip stick (first of Rick89GTS pics). Interpreting what I think Rick said (pictures aren't of the entire dip stick), that length would be (20.5" - 9.0" =) 11.5".

Does the ST162 dip stick have the same length between these 2 points on its dip stick? If yes, then they can be interchanged, provided the part of the dip stick extending above the tube can be bent to avoid obstacles. Of course, the area of the low and high oil level marks actually is what is important - that area needs to be at the dame distance from the tube entry position of the dip stick.

I have an ST185 and an ST184 (3S-GTE engine and 5S-FE engine) in the garage. I'll compare those when I get home from work tonight.

Yes, from the top of the dipstick tube, the lengths of the 162 and 165 dipsticks are not the same length (the 165 is longer by a few inches). I thought they would be same but no such luck.

Here's how they compare from below the tube; 162 on top and 165 bottom. Sorry, I couldn't get my full side-by-side comparison photo to upload. Will try again later.

Conclusion, you can't use the ST162 dipstick for the ST165. Unless you are a master welder haha

Thanks folks. Maybe someone has a spare.....

And it was the ST165 dip stick in the prior pics with the tape measure, right?

What is the overall length of the ST165 dipstick? I might be able to get a long one from another Toyota and cut the end off.

I think Rick said in one of his prior posts the overall length was 20.5" for the ST165 dip stick.
