We are doing the same project:
Current plan is to swap the powertrain from an ST205. Mine is also a 1996 2 Door 4WD.

Niceeee! Dude these cars are hilariously tiny and dont weigh shit. We just put together a 5sf built block with 3s head for it. I cant wait to have it running. Those gt4 trans are a little hard to find so we may just bolt up the stock auto to till we find something that makes sense not to keep delaying this thing
