Ok so i just installed my second aem pump in my st165, 3rd gen swapped, full bolt ons, 17psi etc etc.. i had written off the first one as a dud since i got it off amazon but this second one i got from one of our suppliers at work is giving me the same issues. car runs like ass. Now with the factory 165 pump the car runs fine across the board but i can tell it needs a bit more fuel than the stock pump can put out.

afrs are full rich at idle, same goes for when im cruising in 5th at 2800rpm. im thinking its just putting out to much pressure for the stock fpr and i might need to switch to an adjustable one. aem says it shouldnt be needed for a return type setup but i cant imagine two aem pumps back to back end up being duds.

The car is still on the stock 3rd gen ecu so getting it tuned it out of the question for the moment, but if i do decide to get an adjustable fpr what should i set it at? aftermaket fprs is one thing ive never messed with, and what do i do with the stock one? leave it there and just unplug the vac line going to it?

Also the pump has its own dedicated wiring with a switch and a relay, voltage dropping it tells me its fine on that end.
honestly has anyone had this problem with this pump? or is it just that our stock fpr isnt quite up to the task?

I don’t personally know of anyone using that pump on a Celica. However, I would assume it’s a bit more than your pressure regulator can handle. A bigger return line would also be a good idea.

I looked at the spec sheet and it can be ran at 6 volts. Have you tried using the stock pump circuit? Since it runs a lower voltage at light load it might help with your issues.

aem recommends upgrading the wiring if you plan on running this pump. i was runnig the upgraded wiring on the stock pump anyway. i did some searching and your right about the return line, its way too small for this kind of pump. my real intention was to drop a denso supra tt pump in it but i cant find one anymore. for now i think i might just drop the stock pump back in, even though its not quite enough for this setup it still ran pretty damn good...better than this anyway and upgrading the fuel lines and regulator is more then i need for my goal with this engine.

I'm subscribing just in case you decide to run this pump after all. I was thinking about moving to it on my car, but definitely with different lines.

If you're resolute about staying on the factory Gen 3 ECU, you should be good with a walbro 255 or supra pump

I've a Walbro 450lph pump on my ST205 and the stock FPR resulted in higher fuel pressure than with the Supra MKIV pump I had before.
An Aeromotive FPR made the situation better but then the OEM return line wasn't large enough. I circumvented the problem for now by increasing the reference fuel pressure from 3 to 4 bar.
