ATS CT-16 and Flex Fuel Combo

How much power are you looking for?

Did your clutch get upgraded when the swap was done?
400hp at the crank would be a good number. In the end you put the parts on and get what you get. But ATS talks about 400bhp with ethanol and a CT16 being the deal.

Got the FX300 when I did the swap.

Things get complicated though when you factor in the possibility of fab work to put a new Toyota inline4 2.0L motor in there. The future is bright or crazy.

For the amount of money that new 2.0 is going to cost, you could probably build a 3S to up over 600hp.

As far as the ATS kit, the Ecumaster EMU isn't bad. I'd say it's a happy middle of the road option. There are obviously higher end models, but it can do everything you need. The most important thing to do is see if anyone in your area can tune it. If you need some changes made you don't want to have to haul it to ATS every time.

Absolutely agreed on the cost of putting a new plant in it. It’s one of those mad money ideas.

Also agreed on the importance of having a local tuner able to work on the ECUMaster unit.
Deadass, I think a stroker would be more worth the money. Me and my boss have been playing around with 400 awhp on my car and how to get there. He said a good GT3071R and stroker would be easy 400hp with tune.

If you really want to play with the idea of 400hp I can talk detes with Cole and see what he would think would be the best.

The new G25-550 would be a better option than the 3071r for that power level. You'll have way quicker spool (similar to stock) and be right there in the sweet spot. For flex fuel I would just run a Link G4+ with a flex fuel sensor and FIC injectors of choice w/ top feed rail. Link is a dang good option with remote tuners. Between data log emailing and TeamViewer you can pick whoever you want to tune it anywhere in the world.

I would agree. The 3071r is a lovely little turbo, but it's getting a bit old. The extra money for the new "G" series from Garrett is well worth it. A GT3582R can do 500+hp on a 3S, and the new G25-550 can make the same power while being two "Garrett sizes" smaller. At 400hp you should start thinking of building the motor depending on the use case, but if the funds aren't there for a stroker that's ok. If one of the G25 turbos were used they spool so well comparatively that you don't need the extra 0.2L to get things moving. Always stroke it if you can (;)) but if the budget isn't there you'll be ok with just rods and pistons for 400hp.

Those 3071r's were great for the time, but I am in agreement that they are outdated. When I bought my white car, it came with a 3rd gen engine swap and ATS 3071r kit, and I hated how lazy it was. It had good tq once the turbo started moving, but it was a dog until then. I swapped it out for a gtx2860r (shameless plug: I need to sell it) and the car was SO much more drivable and enjoyable.

Roreri: E85 will get you close to a 100 extra hp. You WILL end up going down the rabbit hole of "are all my fuel components e85-safe though.
IMO the tune is the most important part. I'm seconding CelicaGT4 here in pushing the Link EMS. It has great support and a lot of tuners are familiar with it. It is the EMS I push all my 3s friends towards. It's similar to my Haltech elite1500 but it is more affordable to adapt to, will be easier to find a tuner, and you'll have a better time getting answers to your questions ( see any link forum post from AdamW, he is technical AND helpful).
Just... get an ems that the tuner you TRUST is comfortable with/prefers.

Monachopsis: grab a ctxona and do cams. I hit 382 awhp on E10 pump gas. E85 is gonna crush the 400 limit whenever I get around to upgrading my fuel feed lines.

Im an HKS turbo guy. My boss and aaron at ATS both say the old 3071r is tried and true, IMO it's old and too expensive for what it is. Also I think its a little too big for our cars as 400hp + lightened chassis is in like gt3 car range of power. I'm trying to get my hands on the GTIII-RS cause its has like no lag.

Specs in case anyone is curious; It looks like just an up sized GTX2860R NGL.

I've heard cams are typically not needed under 450 and moreover can ruin anything below power curve. I was looking at the HKS 272 or GSC 274s. I'm also trying to get something that has no lag as my current motorsports/driving style prioritizes grip though braking and accelerating, so less lag>top end

The piggyback for LINK G4X has been recommended to me by everyone with big money cars. I also know a drift guy sponsored by them that may be able to get discounts. He's a local (Csprings). As far as tuners for you and me @Roreri we a little short on 3sgte/toyota tuners. I was asking around for a little. From what I heard though a LINK ECU specialist can remote and road tune though.

E85 is also a rabbit hole. I've heard is good to have on a track car to inch out power given like engine restrictions or intake restrictors. The only other big benefit is it runs much colder. Personally I think getting the car squared ECU wise and good on pump would be the biggest return on investment. You're already on a 4/5th gen engine with a upgraded turbo, intake, downpipe, exhaust, etc. WITHOUT tune, so I think with one you'd see some serious gain. Once you're creeping for more, E85 can be tuned easier if you have a base 93/91 tune by just uping the fuel. Moreover theres like 2 gas stations that sell it...

^ if you find a good remote tuner please share their info. I feel like at some point moving on from the stock EMS is kinda inevitable for me.

If you want one of those grab them now, I believe Nixspeed only has a handful left and then they won't be making them any more.

I'm a bit confused as to whether you are pro-cams or not. I tend to be a cam-evangelist, so I can't help myself to not share my opinions on the topic :)
Running bigger cams allow your engine to make power more safely. More CFM from cams means less PSI needed to cram O2 into each cylinder.
Like everything in this world, there is a tradeoff. You do lose some area under the curve with a larger cam set, but the negative impact isn't as bad as it used to be as modern turbo tech has decreased spooling time substantially. Other options: anti-lag, tuning your engine to retard timing as it starts to move out of vacuum and into boost, running a higher compression ratio (new pistons, mill the deck/head, thinner MLS head gasket. Probably a lot of other crafty options, too.
If you are on the fence on cams, hit me up anytime you are in KC and I'll take you for a drive. My mission will benefit from more apostles.

If finding e85 is difficult, you and Roreri need to split a barrel of e98 every summer. You can run it while you are racing and set the tune up to make the same power as pump gas, but much safer. Or more :devilish:

KO Racing does remote tuning for Link. He took a crack at my Haltech before I found a Haltech specialist with tunedbyshawn (highly recommend for anyone running Haltech and needing a remote tune). I think the big benefit to Link is that it's well-known inside the community and a plug-and-play option is available. I had to wire up the Haltech on my own and there was a time and cash penalty as I learned and iterated the process.
I'm also of the opinion that the 3s is NOT a complicated engine and any proficient tuner should be able to handle it. You just want someone that knows Link so they don't get caught out by things like "I think this table does this one thing but it ACTUALLY does this other thing".

I have LinkG4x in my ST165 and it’s freaking awesome! Their support is absolutely amazing.

I had Jeff Evan’s do my tune remote by emailing log files back and forth. It’s AMAZING how much Jeff knows about tuning and Link. He is an absolute wizard. I cannot recommend him and Link enough.

Select his eTune service.

When I was doing my Coil on Plug conversion, I needed some help to set the timing. I literally went in the house and got on the support chat, had all my questions answered within minutes. I’ve contacted Link support many times, Jose and Simon are super helpful, and go out of their way.
